We’re a company full of innovative individuals, or as we call them, #innoviduals. This recurring series highlights some of our best and brightest employees, providing insights about the scope and depth of talent throughout Leidos.

This month’s #innovidual is Tim Barton, a Leidos Vice President, Technical Fellow, and Solutions Architect. Dr. Barton is currently the Maritime Chief Engineer of the Leidos Mission Systems Integration Operation, where he oversees all technical aspects of the Operation’s efforts in the maritime domain — including a wide variety of sensor systems and platforms.

What does innovation mean to you?

“Technical innovation is a critical aspect of everything we do at Leidos, especially in our work in the maritime space with the U.S. Navy and the Intelligence Community. While at Leidos, I have had the luxury of working with some incredibly talented teams that consistently bring disruptive new technologies and innovations to our customers that can fundamentally change the way they execute and fight missions, reduce cost, and reduce risk to the warfighter.”

What are some recent examples of innovation from your job?

“One example of a disruptive innovation is our work in the area of autonomous unmanned surface vessels (USVs) for the Navy. USVs will allow the fleet to execute new missions and have increased capability and capacity while keeping sailors out of harm’s way.

“Another example of a disruptive innovation is in the area of new hardware configurations and signal processing techniques for distributed netted sensor systems. These new configurations and techniques exploit the physics of sound propagation in new ways, allow significantly improved target detection and tracking, and can potentially hold our adversaries at risk for longer periods of time over larger areas of interest.”
