Events around the world recognized and celebrated International Women’s Day (March 8) last week. Leidos employees marked the occasion through internal events held at several locations throughout the world. There were, however, a couple of external events in the United Kingdom where Leidos staff attended and participated in Scottish Women in Technology panels held in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Co-sponsored by Leidos and News Group, owners of The Times and Sunday Times, our very own Sharon Lindsay took part in the Glasgow event. Lindsay, an Infrastructure Manager based in Glasgow, was featured alongside some of the best women in technology Scotland has to offer.
The panelists at both events spoke about subjects ranging from their own career paths, examples of where they had overcome challenges in their early careers, the need to engage and encourage young people into technology professions, and mentoring.
On the importance of mentoring, Lindsay said this: “I have always been lucky enough to have a mentor to guide me through my career and champion me to success. Having the perspective of someone who is separate to your day-to-day work — who is able to offer fresh insight and counsel — has helped me enormously in overcoming challenges throughout my career.”
A wide range of staff from our Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Farnborough offices attended both events. The networking sessions after the panels allowed everyone to mingle and talk about the sessions, meet with the panelists, and have peer-to-peer discussions on how they could and would benefit from some of the topics spoken about. Fresh ideas and thought-provoking activities took flight around the rooms, with some new initiatives likely to start as a result.
Gill McNeill, Leidos UK Head of HR, echoed Lindsay's views: “At Leidos, we always try to support colleagues who are actively looking for a mentor. A mentoring relationship that both parties commit time to is irreplaceable in terms of providing support, advice and guidance at all stages of your career. If you’re not currently mentoring and want to get involved, please let us know!”
