The 19th Annual Women in Technology (WIT) Leadership Awards were held last week in Tysons Corner, Va., and for the second consecutive year, a Leidos employee was among the honorees.
WIT is a non-profit organization with the stated mission of advancing women in technology through advocacy, leadership development, networking, mentoring, and technology education. Their annual awards identify, recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of women leading the way in the technology industry across the National Capital Region.
Vicki Schmanske, Deputy President and Chief Operating Officer of Leidos Health, won the 2018 Leadership Award in the Corporate Large Market Sector. In 2017, Meghan Good won in the Technical Leadership category.
Among 44 WIT finalists, Vicki was one of nine award recipients this year and bested four peers in her category from Verizon, Accenture, AT&T Global, and Akamai Technologies.
“I was extremely honored to be in the company of so many great leaders, great advocates for diversity in our tech companies,” said Schmanske. “To be able to represent Leidos and receive this prestigious award is amazing.”
Schmanske is an accomplished executive who has successfully held roles of increasing responsibility across Defense, Intelligence, Civil and Commercial markets throughout her 35-year career. In her current role, she has a track record of building effective relationships across the healthcare community. She consistently leverages the capabilities of the entire organization to resolve program performance issues and achieve strategic growth.
“Being part of the Leidos Health Group is an incredible experience,” she added. “I get to come to work every day with the best and brightest, as we support our citizens and veterans, do groundbreaking research, and help healthcare systems worldwide work more efficiently — it doesn’t get any better than that.”
In the past, Schmanske has led teams for complex, critical national missions, including: building satellite ground systems for the defense and intelligence community, implementing enterprise IT solutions and services for defense and civil customers, implementing the FBI’s Next Generation Identification System, and overseeing the team that runs the Frederick National Lab for Cancer Research.
In addition to her professional achievements, she is active in the community and serves on several industry and community boards to help raise awareness and improve advocacy for the challenges women face in the workforce. Schmanske, seen below with Meghan Good, is a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee of the University of Virginia (UVA) Engineering Foundation and is engaged with the UVA Society of Women Engineers chapter.
“Being in a position to help the next generation of technology leaders grow is a privilege,” she continued. “We owe it to the next generation to see that they know more than we did and can do more than we have for the future of this nation.”
For the past several years she has served as the Leidos Corporate Executive Champion for the annual American Heart Association - Washington Heart Walk. Heart disease is the the leading cause of death in women and Schmanske's efforts have helped raise close to $400,000 for the AHA.
“Heart disease is a personal cause for me. It has impacted my family and my friends’ families and I have seen the pain and suffering that comes with it,” said Schmanske. “We have to keep up the fight to find better treatments and preventative measures for our kids and their kids.”
Distinguished at work and in the community, it’s easy to see why Schmanske is a deserving winner of this year's WIT Leadership Award.
